NSW CTP Insurer Claims Performance: How the Six Insurers Compare (2026)

October 7, 2026

Every green slip in NSW gives you the same level of CTP cover. But the six licensed insurers do not handle claims in the same way.

SIRA’s latest comparison covers 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. During that period, AAMI and GIO accepted the highest shares of statutory benefits claims, at 98.2% and 98.1%, respectively.

Youi paid first income support fastest, at 4.0 weeks, and had the highest customer service score. QBE received 37.1% of complaints but held 23.5% of active claims.

The data does not show price. Use it as a second check after you compare prices. Check what each insurer charges first.

What claims data does SIRA publish on CTP insurers?

SIRA publishes the CTP Insurer Claims Experience and Customer Feedback Comparison. It helps people compare insurers when they buy a green slip. It also shows injured people what to expect from the insurer that manages their claim.

SIRA updated the June 2026 edition on 23 September 2026. It covers AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA, QBE and Youi, and it reports seven measures:

  • Claims accepted for statutory benefits
  • Time to the first income support payment
  • Treatment and care within four weeks of the claim
  • Internal reviews done within the required time
  • People working 26 weeks after the crash
  • A customer service score
  • Complaints from injured people

Which CTP insurer accepts the most claims?

AAMI accepted 98.2% of claims and GIO accepted 98.1%. QBE (97.6%), Youi (97.4%) and NRMA (96.6%) come next. Allianz had the lowest rate, at 94.5%.

SIRA does not adjust these figures for the type of claims each insurer gets. So a lower rate alone does not prove worse service.

Which insurer pays income support and treatment fastest?

Youi made the first income support payment in 4.0 weeks on average, counted from the date of lodgement. NRMA took 4.1 weeks, and Allianz took 4.2 weeks. QBE was the slowest, at 5.1 weeks. The gap from fastest to slowest is about one week.

For treatment and care within four weeks, Youi (97.6%) and Allianz (97.2%) had the highest rates. QBE had the lowest, at 94.2%.

How do injured people rate their insurer?

SIRA’s customer service score shows how people rate their insurer three months into their claim. A higher score means a better experience. The six insurers differ most on this measure.

InsurerCustomer service scoreInternal reviews on time
AAMI67.1%99.5%
Allianz74.3%99.8%
GIO72.9%99.8%
NRMA68.6%98.3%
QBE66.1%98.3%
Youi79.8%99.4%

Youi had the highest score, at 79.8%. QBE had the lowest, at 66.1%. The gap is almost 14 points.

All six insurers did at least 98.3% of internal reviews on time. An internal review is the first step if you disagree with an insurer’s decision. You have 28 days after you get the decision to ask for one.

Which insurer gets the most complaints?

QBE. It received 158 of the 426 complaints that SIRA recorded from injured people. That is 37.1% of all complaints, compared with 23.5% of active claims.

Look at the share of complaints next to the share of claims. A large insurer gets more complaints because it manages more claims.

InsurerComplaintsShare of complaintsShare of active claims
AAMI4410.3%9.5%
Allianz6214.6%22.4%
GIO337.7%12.8%
NRMA12128.4%27.9%
QBE15837.1%23.5%
Youi81.9%3.9%

Allianz, GIO and Youi had a lower share of complaints than of claims. AAMI and NRMA were close to their share of claims. QBE was the only insurer well above it.

Which insurer will manage my claim?

Usually the insurer of the vehicle that caused the crash. SIRA tells injured people to notify the insurer of the at-fault vehicle. So if another driver caused the crash, you deal with that driver’s insurer.

If you do not know who the insurer is, call SIRA’s CTP Assist on 1300 656 919. SIRA sets these timeframes for every insurer:

  • The insurer contacts you within 3 days of lodgement.
  • The insurer gives a liability decision within 4 weeks.
  • If you are entitled to weekly payments, they start within 10 working days.

Does claims performance change the price of a green slip?

No. SIRA’s comparison shows how insurers manage claims. It does not show what they charge.

Prices differ because each insurer has its own view of risk and uses different rating factors. These include your age, driving history, demerit points and where you park the vehicle. The total always includes the Fund Levy and GST. Our green slip price check guide shows how to see all six prices at once.

Should claims data decide which insurer I buy from?

Use it to choose between prices that are close. Do not let it outweigh a large price difference.

The data shows what happened across 12 months. It cannot predict how your own claim will go. Youi held only 3.9% of active claims and received 8 complaints. Small numbers like these can change more from one report to the next.

What does the SIRA data not show?

  • The price of a green slip, or which insurer is cheapest
  • The type or severity of the injuries each insurer manages
  • How your own claim will go
  • Any change after 30 June 2026, until SIRA’s next quarterly report

People also ask about CTP insurer claims performance

Got questions? If you’re wondering which CTP insurer to choose, here are other questions that might help you make the right decision.

1. Which CTP insurer is best for claims in NSW?

No insurer leads on every measure. In SIRA’s year to 30 June 2026, AAMI had the highest claims acceptance and work participation. Youi was the fastest to first income support, the best on treatment within four weeks and the highest on customer service.

2. Where can I see how CTP insurers perform?

On SIRA’s Compare the performance of CTP insurers page. SIRA updates its insurer comparison each quarter.

3. Do CTP insurers with weaker claims data charge less?

The claims data does not measure price. Each insurer sets its price with its own rating factors, so compare prices separately.

4. Which CTP insurer gets the most complaints?

QBE, with 37.1% of complaints and 23.5% of active claims in SIRA’s year to 30 June 2026. NRMA had the second-largest share, at 28.4%, which is close to its 27.9% share of claims.

Just a friendly reminder before you start….

DUTY OF DISCLOSURE/ DUTY NOT TO MAKE A MISREPRESENTATION

Before you enter into an insurance contract, you have a duty to tell the insurer anything that you know, or could reasonably be expected to know, that may affect the insurer's decision to insure you and on what terms. You have this duty until the insurer agrees to insure you. You have the same duty before you renew, extend, vary, or reinstate an insurance contract.

For Personal, Domestic and Household insurance contracts, you have an additional duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to the insurer. To ensure you meet your duty, your responses to the insurer's questions must be truthful, accurate and complete.

IF YOU DO NOT TELL THE INSURER SOMETHING

If you do not tell the insurer anything you are required to, they may cancel your contract, or reduce the amount they will pay you if you make a claim, or both. If your failure to tell the insurer is fraudulent, they may refuse to pay a claim and treat the contract as if it never existed.
