Most NSW drivers cannot get a 3-month green slip. For a car or other light vehicle up to 4.5 tonnes, you can choose a 6-month or a 12-month term. The 3-month term is for heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes and trailers.
Your green slip term must match your registration term. So the term you choose for one sets the term for the other.

Can I get a 3-month green slip for my car?
No. NSW Government rules make 3-month registration available only for trailers and heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). A car, ute or SUV up to 4.5 tonnes GVM can only renew for 6 or 12 months.
NRMA says a 3-month green slip can also be available to a motor dealer who registers a vehicle for the first time. That is a trade arrangement. It does not apply to private owners.
Trailers and caravans do not need a green slip at all. So a 3-month trailer registration does not involve CTP insurance.
Who can choose a 6-month green slip?
The 6-month term is available for:
- Light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes GVM
- Motorcycles
- Heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM
- Trailers (registration only, because trailers do not need CTP)
If your truck is over 4.5 tonnes, you can choose 3, 6 or 12 months.

When do I have to take 12 months?
You lose the 6-month option if you renew more than 21 days after your registration expires. Service NSW says a 6-month renewal must be paid, with its CTP, no later than 21 days after expiry. After that, 12 months is the only term.
Two other situations also point you to 12 months:
- First registration. NRMA says you may only be able to choose a 12-month green slip when you register a vehicle for the first time.
- Transfer to a new owner. When a registration moves to a new person, the next renewal notice defaults to 12 months. Service NSW says you may be able to change the term when you renew.
If your registration stays expired for more than 3 months, you cannot renew online. You must re-register the vehicle at a service centre.
Does my green slip term have to match my registration?
Yes. Service NSW says the CTP term you buy decides the registration period you can renew for. If you want to change from 12 months to 6 months, buy a 6-month green slip first. Then renew your registration for 6 months.
Your renewal notice repeats the term you chose last time. So a notice for 12 months does not stop you from choosing 6 months, as long as you buy a 6-month green slip.
Conditionally registered vehicles work differently. Their CTP is included in the registration, and you cannot change the term online.
Is a 6-month green slip cheaper overall?
It costs less upfront, but it may not cost less over a year. No SIRA or Service NSW rule says a 6-month green slip must cost exactly half of a 12-month one. Each insurer sets its own price for each term.
The only way to know is to price both terms for your vehicle. The green slip calculator can help you calculate that when you compare all six licensed insurers.
Registration fees for a short term are separate from the green slip. The NSW Government rego calculator shows those costs. For heavy vehicles, a short-term surcharge applies. It is 10% of the NHVR regulatory charge and the NTC road user charge.
Does a 6-month term change when I need a pink slip?
It can. Most light vehicles more than 5 years old need a safety inspection report (pink slip) to renew. A pink slip is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
Service NSW says you need an inspection when your renewal notice shows one is required and your term stays the same. You also need one when the new expiry date will be more than 12 months after your last renewal that needed an inspection. For example, you had an inspection, renewed for 6 months, and now want 12 months. That renewal needs a new pink slip.
If you change your term, ask for a new renewal notice. It shows whether your inspection requirement has changed.
Can I use a 6-month term to move my renewal date?
Yes. Some drivers renew for 6 months once, then go back to 12 months. This moves the renewal date by six months, for example away from the Christmas period.
Check two things first. The change back to 12 months can trigger a pink slip, as shown above. And renew on time, because a late renewal does not move the expiry date.
Service NSW says the new period starts on the day you pay, but the expiry date stays the same.
What is seasonal registration?
Seasonal registration is for vehicles used only part of the year, such as during harvest or snow season. It lets you register a vehicle for any combination of 3-month and 6-month terms in a 12-month period.
You apply on a paper form at a Service NSW centre. You need a green slip that covers the seasonal registration period, plus the correct inspection report.
How early can I buy my green slip?
Service NSW lets you renew your registration up to 3 months before it expires, if you have a renewal notice. Insurers can set their own window for green slips. NRMA, for example, sells renewals online up to 42 days before the due date and asks you to call for anything earlier.
NRMA says a green slip bought early starts only when the new registration period begins. If you do not use a green slip, QBE says it may wait for a use-by date before it refunds you. That date is 21 days after the registration start date for a 6-month term, and 3 months for other terms. Our green slip refund guide explains the steps.

People also ask about green slip terms
These are the questions NSW drivers ask most about green slip terms. Each answer follows the current Service NSW and NSW Government rules.
1. Can I get a 3-month green slip in NSW?
Only for a heavy vehicle over 4.5 tonnes GVM, or through a motor dealer registering a vehicle for the first time. Light vehicles can renew for 6 or 12 months.
2. Can I switch from a 12-month to a 6-month green slip?
Yes, at your next renewal. Buy a 6-month green slip, then renew your registration for 6 months within 21 days of the expiry date.
3. Can I pay my green slip monthly?
NRMA says no. Its green slips must be paid in full for the registration term. Check with your insurer before you buy.
4. Do trailers need a green slip?
No. Trailers and caravans do not need CTP insurance. They still need registration.
5. What happens if I renew more than 21 days late?
You must renew for 12 months. The new period starts on the day you pay, but the expiry date does not change.
