Most drivers hunting for the cheapest green slip start in the wrong place. They look for a cheaper seller, the way they would shop for a phone plan or a flight.
Green slips do not work that way, and understanding why saves a lot of wasted effort — the goal is not just the cheapest quote, but the best CTP green slip quote for your situation.

The Seller Does Not Set The Price
Licensed insurers must file the full set of premiums they propose to charge with SIRA. The filed price forms the basis of what you get quoted. For a full breakdown of the pricing mechanics, see our guide to how the greenslip price is set for each motor vehicle.
SIRA can reject a filing where prices are excessive or inadequate, or where they do not conform with the Motor Accident Guidelines. Insurers must charge enough to cover the overall cost of future claims and operational costs at an aggregate level.
You can obtain a green slip directly from a licensed insurer, or through agents, outlets and online services. Every one of them works from the same filed prices, so the search for a cheaper place to buy has no answer; the question itself is built on a false premise. Our own price comparison tool uses those same regulated prices, with nothing added or hidden.
The Cover Is Identical Too
All green slip insurance provides exactly the same cover. A green slip covers injuries caused to people in a motor accident involving your vehicle, extending to passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, per SIRA’s scheme description. For a deeper walkthrough of what the scheme does and does not cover, see our NSW CTP scheme explainer.
This matters more than it first appears. If the price cannot vary by seller, and the cover cannot vary at all, then switching insurers carries no hidden downside. You are not trading protection for savings. You are choosing between identical products that happen to be priced differently.
So What Does Change Your Price In 2026?
Three things, in order of impact.
- Which insurer you choose. Six insurers are licensed to issue CTP green slips in NSW: AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA, QBE and Youi. Prices vary between them even for identical coverage. One insurer might be cheapest for your risk profile while another is cheapest for someone else. This is the largest lever available, and most drivers never pull it because they renew automatically. If you have been with the same insurer for years, our guide on whether switching CTP insurers is worth it in 2026 walks through the tradeoffs — and our counter-view on when switching green slip providers actually costs you more is worth reading before you commit.
- When you compare. Insurers must file with SIRA at least once a year, but in practice they update prices more often, so premiums can change often (see how often CTP prices change). The insurer that suited your vehicle in 2025 may not suit it now. A comparison from six months ago is already stale.
- Whether you compare totals. Your cost includes premium, GST and the Fund Levy. The Fund Levy is set by SIRA and shown separately on your invoice. It is the same across every insurer and seller, but it differs by vehicle class and region. SIRA’s published average from 15 January 2026 is $190.60, up $25.80 from $164.80 — a 15.6 per cent rise in a single year. For a motor car, that levy ranges from $130 in Country NSW to $169 in Sydney Metro. Comparing base premiums alone can point you at the wrong insurer.
Three Tactics That Do Not Work
- Negotiating with an insurer. Prices are filed with SIRA before they can be quoted, so there is nothing to discuss. An insurer cannot tailor a green slip premium to your budget, and any seller suggesting otherwise is describing something the scheme does not permit. Our guide to understanding your green slip quote explains what each line item is.
- Hunting for a discount seller. The filed price applies wherever you buy. Time spent looking for a cheaper outlet is time not spent comparing insurers, which is where the actual variation lives.
- Assuming one insurer wins for everyone. No provider is cheapest across every vehicle and every driver profile. Recommendations from friends or forums reflect their circumstances, not yours. If your last quote was very different from your current one, our explainer on why your green slip quote changed covers the common reasons.
Why Prices Keep Rising In 2026
Even a well-compared green slip costs more than it used to. According to the SIRA 2017 CTP Scheme Performance Report to 30 June 2025, the average NSW premium across all vehicles reached $536 for the 2024–25 financial year, with a $35 (7 per cent) increase from June 2024 to June 2025; the largest annual rise since 2015. SIRA attributes the increase to a mix of 2022 legislative amendments that lifted benefits, higher levies and general inflation. For a plain-English breakdown, read why NSW green slips went up in 2026 or why your green slip is so expensive.
For policies starting on or after 15 January 2026, insurers have already filed further price increases, and SIRA’s own 2025 Review states that “further premium increases are expected into 2026.” Current 2026 renewal quotes are tracking noticeably higher than the 2025 figure as a result.
The Fund Levy accounts for part of that, having risen $25.80 from 15 January 2026. That component is outside any insurer’s control and outside yours. Which is precisely why the controllable part — insurer choice at each renewal, matters more as prices climb.
Where This Leaves You In 2026
The cheapest green slip in NSW is not found at a particular shop. It is found by comparing all six licensed insurers for your specific vehicle, garaging address and driving history, then buying from whichever channel you find convenient.
If you want the step-by-step process for running that comparison, our green slip comparison guide walks through it.
